As a previous undergraduate college student, I can assure you that starting early in your academic journey will definitely help you in the long run!

1. First and foremost, you want to join clubs and organizations representing you. Join groups based on your ethnicity, culture, major, or interest. As a biology major, I joined several clubs such as the Biochemistry Club, Chicano Club, Pre-Health Club, and CSI3 Leadership Club, and even created my own club. I can go into more detail on how you can create your own club in another blog.

I also joined various organizations such as the Women In STEM(WISE), STEM Scholars, Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE), and more. Getting involved with your college community will not only help you expand your network but also help you in your journey.

2. Start Internships by sophomore or junior year. As a first-generation college student, I have not been exposed to what internships were or how to apply. But through my networking of joining various organizations, I was exposed to a lot of internships and opportunities which helped build my resume.
3. Volunteering throughout your community is a great way to give back but it can also be an opportunity for you to build your resume. Highlighting those important qualities in your resume will definitely help you stand out when applying for jobs or internship opportunities.

4. Highlight the key points in your job! For example, being a math tutor, I can easily say, "I helped tutor students on various subjects".
What you can do is highlight how you helped them, such as "Provided One-on-One Tutoring with students from 8th Grade to 12th Grade & Assisted students with Geometry, Statistics, Business, Algebra 2, and Pre-Calculus".

These are some examples that I used for my resume you can add similar ones to help you highlight the key things in your work.

5. Add your research experience. You can start doing research through your local college or even through programs from various campuses. I started my research journey in the summer of my sophomore year. It helped me understand and appreciate the field of research.

6. Add any awards or certificates that represent and showcase your achievements. Many think these are irrelevant or unimportant, but they can be crucial to understanding who you are.

7. Last and not least add your top-quality skills. Adding that to your resume will make you stand out if you speak more than one language. Also highlighting your social media skills and computer software.

If you are advanced in Microsoft Word, Google PowerPoint, or Canva then you should highlight those skills.

These are only some of the main key points on how to build your resume as an undergraduate college student. You can also reach out to your local university career centers or ask your advisors who you can reach out to so they can take a look at your resume. I would not lie if I did over five drafts of my resume, it is important to design and construct a well-organized resume.
