As a first-generation college student, I found myself navigating a landscape that was largely unfamiliar to me, filled with challenges and opportunities that I had never previously encountered. Growing up, I did not have the privilege of being surrounded by family members or mentors who had experienced the college journey, which meant that I was not exposed to the myriad of resources and opportunities available to minority populations, such as scholarships, mentorship programs, or networking events specifically aimed at supporting underrepresented students. This lack of exposure initially made me feel isolated and uncertain about how to make the most of my college experience.
Despite these challenges, I was determined to carve out a path for myself. I began to actively seek out and connect with various resources offered by my local university. The university had a wealth of programs designed to support students like me, including academic advising, tutoring services, and workshops focused on professional development. I learned how to navigate the often-complex web of academic requirements and extracurricular opportunities that could enhance my education and career prospects.
